Stress is an inevitable part of everyone’s life but for a college student, it can get particularly hard to face the daily academic challenges, trying to meet deadlines for papers and assignments, and pulling all-nighters before important exams and presentations. In such situations most students complain about being overly stressed by the academic pressure which in turn affects their mental and psychological health. Here are the top 5 stress triggers that most college students experience.
1. An overly busy schedule
It is quite common for a college student to be laden with responsibilities and deadlines that are weighing down on them, crushing their hopes of having a social life or more than 5 hours of sleep at night. This stressful scenario is more commonly seen in senior year students who are already burned out by 3 years of non-stop academic pressure or in exam seasons when the students finally pick up their dusty, unused text books to finally start preparing for the upcoming tests. College students need to plan better for their academic semester so that they don’t have to take all the stress at once, a few days before the exams and cram the entire books into their poor, over-worked brains at once.
2. Exams
Only college students know the struggle of having tests every week, mid-term exams every two months and finals every four months apart from regular homework assignments, in-class oral exams, presentations and research papers to write. It is hard being a student and most instructors fail to understand their struggles. The pressure of these exams and their impact on the students’ grades takes a heavy toll on their mental health, putting the student under a lot of stress.
3. Public speaking
Public speaking is known as every college student’s worst nightmare and unfortunately, is an inevitable part of their academic career. Almost all colleges require their students to take public speaking courses in an effort to make the student more confident and articulate in making speeches and doing presentations. If you don’t belong to a political background and if your mother is not Hilary Clinton, then public speaking can be a huge nightmare for you and put you under a huge amount of stress.
4. Social events
Think parties, graduation ceremonies, anniversary celebrations and other family gatherings on top of everything else that is going on in your life. There can be a lot of stress involved in attending such social events, especially if you aren’t the most outgoing kid in the bunch. Making time for these events, adjusting the rest of your schedule around these events, figuring out what you’ll have to wear and practicing what you’ll have to say can be quite stressful and add up to your daily level of anxiety.
5. Personal problems
Well, because students are humans, they have their own lives outside college and like all other humans, they also face ups and downs in their personal lives which can give them a great deal of stress. Sometimes as students, our relationships with family, friends and significant other can suffer greatly due to the lack of time and inability to invest more energy into those relationships. Apart from relationships, students also have to deal with feelings and emotions that are hard to manage, and these personal problems can contribute to a great deal of stress in a student’s life.
