Ten Items Your Dorm Room Absolutely Needs

Living in a dorm isn’t that much fun but it is what you have to do when you’re in college. Dorms are pretty small and boring and you will find that you don’t have much room to put things in yours, but there are some things that you definitely must have. If you’re on your way to college this fall and you are wondering what you will need and what you should definitely have in your dorm, here are 10 things you definitely won’t want to be without.

Memory Foam Mattress Topper

If your used to sleeping in a comfy, soft bed and you go to live in a dorm, you’re in for some real culture shock. The mattresses are not soft and they’re far from comfy. A Memory Foam mattress topper is definitely going to make that bed more comfortable for you and ensure you will not be waking up with a sore back every morning. Plus, it’s going to be yours, so you can take it with you at the end of each year.

Tool Kit

You may not think you will need it, but you’ll be surprised at just how many times a tool kit will come in handy at college. You may need to raise or lower your bed, you may need to screw something to a wall or a door. Tool kits are affordable, small and they are definitely useful, so be sure to keep one on hand.

Shower Caddy and Bath Wrap

Since you are going to be using a community bathroom on your floor in the dorm hall, you’re definitely going to want to have a shower caddy to haul all of your stuff to the bathroom and back with you so you don’t have to worry about dropping anything. At home, you probably leave your stuff in the bathroom, but at the dorm, you can’t. A bath wrap will also make it easier for you to get back to your dorm room to get dressed. It closes with Velcro so you will never have to worry about it falling off.

Bed Risers

As we mentioned before, a dorm room is small and there is not much space to put things, so you may find that you have to store things underneath your bed. Bed risers will come in handy when you need to shove stuff under there. Some even have their very own built in outlets to make things easier for you in your dorm room, especially if you do not have many outlets.

Keurig Coffee Pot

College students drink a lot, and we mean, a lot of coffee and buying coffee drinks at cafes can get really expensive really fast. Buying a Keurig coffee pot to brew one cup at a time will save you tons of money, especially if you buy the reusable K-Cup that you fill with your own coffee. You can then buy cans or bags of coffee and a little bit will go a long way. Think of all the money you will save.

Mini Fridge

Having a mini fridge in your dorm room is a must because you will need to keep some things cold. If you like milk, yogurt, or other foods, you will want to have a fridge. You can also use this to keep bottles of water or soda cold so you’re not constantly spending money at the campus dining hall on cold ones. These are also great to keep food if you do go out to eat once in a while and can’t finish your meal. You’ll be able to eat the left overs for another meal instead of throwing it out.

Command Strips

It may sound absolutely ridiculous, but Command strips are a must for the dorm room. You’re always going to need to hang something up, whether it be your wet towel wrap or your keys and you don’t want to do any damage to the walls that will cost you later, so these are a safe way to hang things and prevent chipping paint or peeling wall paper, if you have any. Plus, they’re really cheap.

Dry Erase Board

A dry erase board is a must for the dorm room as well because you’re always going to want to leave yourself reminders about upcoming tests and events and they’re great for your friends to leave you notes on your door while you’re out.

Closet Organizer

Because you do not have a lot of room in a dorm closet, a closet organizer can make it easier to fit more things in there. You can fold up your hoodies and put them in it, or use it to store shoes, lotions and so much more. You have to make the most of your room.

Chair Cushion

You’re not going to have a real comfy chair at your dorm desk and if you are sitting it in for an extended period of time doing homework, your bottom will get sore. Get yourself a chair cushion and spare yourself the sore bottom later on.
