5 Major Differences Between High School and College Life

There are quite a few differences between High School and College life, ones that will surely catch you off guard. No longer will you to follow this social order or risk being a complete outcast. Times have changed drastically in one year. You went from being a kid to being an adult in an adult’s worlds. This is where those twelve years of grade school pay off.

Smoking On Campus

High School
Back in high school, smoking a cigarette is ah uge taboo. Nobody even attempt to smoke a cigarette on campus because it would risk them getting suspended or at the very least a detention. Let’s not forget that most of the school is too young to even purchase cigarettes. Smoking is just something you don’t do in High School. You save it for the parks and community centers after school hours.
College
Smoking a cigarette is no big deal in college. When first toured a college campus and saw students smoking everywhere, it blew my mind! Pretty soon I was one of them. Smoking in social circles, smoking at the outdoor eating area and even smoking outside of the classroom door. I felt so adult.

Napping On Campus

High School

Sleeping in the quad at lunch time would qualify you as a total weirdo in High School. How weird it would have been to have seen a kid sleeping while everyone else was mingling within their social circles. This just didn’t happen. Sleeping in class was much more acceptable but even this would bring on mocking.
College
In college the public sleeper is no rare sight. It was perfectly acceptable to see students sleeping by the water fountain, on the benches or under trees. This is what college life makes of a person. I’ve done this myself plenty of times and nobody cared. It’s college!

Eating Alone

High School
You never wanted to be the kid who ate alone at school. Your social circle was your shield against a cruel, cruel hormonal world. If you didn’t feel bad for the kid eating alone, you mocked or judged him. The lunch time loner was as vulnerable as turtle crossing a highway.
College
No one cares anymore. If you eat alone, it’s no big deal. If you eat alone everyday, no one will even notice or judge you. Some of my most relaxing meals in college was eating alone with a book between classes.

Not Showing Up

High School
Missing a day of school would be a bittersweet experience. Sure, you get the free day, but then you also fall behind. You’ll have to copy some kid’s illegible notes and have a parent pick up the day’s homework for you. It’s horrible.
College
It doesn’t matter if you show up. If you have the books you can read what you missed. If you’re lucky your professor will post talking points online. Some students only show up to take the exam. If you aren’t one for sitting in a class all day, there are other ways to pass the class.

Sitting Up Front

High School
In high school you don’t want to sit at the front of the class. In doing so you’ll miss all the back of the class action. You won’t be able to talk, pass notes or sleep. Plus the kids will all think you’re a nerd up there. You’ll often opt for a seat close to your friends.
College
There’s no way you want to sit in the back of the class, especially if it’s in some hundred student lecture hall. If you see a chair in the front of the room you’re taking it. No way are you paying all this money in order to fall behind.
